The Zara
and Friends trust was set up to help raise funds
for charities that help children with cerebral palsy.
Since Zara was diagnosed with CP, it has amazed
us just how much charity work is responsible for
the very specialised care that is needed for these
children. This care is simply not available through
the NHS. This last year, we have met some pretty
amazing people who run some fantastic organisations
to help children like Zara.
We want to help these organisations as best we can
by giving them what they need to continue –
money.
Matt and Vicky Cottle
In
May 2007, Vicky went into labour at 39 weeks following
a textbook pregnancy. After 21 hours of normal labour
things started to go very wrong; Vicky had somehow
contracted E.coli which ravaged her body causing
septicaemia.
This sent Zara’s heartbeat racing for twenty
minutes and then stopped her heart completely. Zara
was stuck inside Vicky and unable to breathe. An
emergency c-section was carried out but Zara had
already gone without oxygen for a very long time
and parts of her brain were now severely damaged.
Having both survived against the odds, Vicky made
a full recovery, but Zara wasn’t so fortunate;
after two weeks of neo-natal care, she was diagnosed
with quadriplegic cerebral palsy – one of
the most severe forms. She is unable to sit up,
or use her arms and legs properly. It is unclear
whether she will be able to walk or talk. This poses
obvious and severe difficulties for her future.
Bobath Children's
Therapy Centre Wales is a registered charity that
depends on donations and the fundraising efforts
of our friends and supporters to enable us to see
every child with cerebral palsy who needs us.
